I’m feeling uncharacteristically quiet again today so I’ll share my thoughts on responsive design very briefly.
All websites must have a responsive design that adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops. Google will punish your listing if you don’t – they want people who search through them to find web sites that give readers a pleasant experience. Google likes to throw its weight around but, in this case, it’s a fair thing to insist upon.
Changing desktop page layouts to a single column for phones is a given but there are design considerations for desktop, too. If you design mobile first, the desktop layout has to adapt. It’s very hard to read all the way across a large desktop screen, so wide blocks of text must be divided properly, for instance.
It makes for a lot of testing before a page layout can be thoroughly trusted but it’s worth it.
